World War I

The Great War (1914-1918) reshaped the political map of Europe and set the stage for the 20th century's conflicts.

World War I (1914–1918), also known as the Great War, was a global conflict centered in Europe. Triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, the war drew in all the great powers, organized into the Allied Powers (France, Britain, Russia, Italy, US) and Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire). The war introduced trench warfare, poison gas, tanks, and aircraft to combat. Over 16 million died and 20 million were wounded. The Treaty of Versailles redrew European borders, dissolved empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, German), and created the League of Nations. The war's unresolved tensions contributed directly to World War II.
